The Badge
"I don't eat sugar." Some of us said it hundreds of times. Some of us — I'm raising my own hand — said it thousands. At birthday parties, holding our tea like a trophy. I call it the badge: the identity sentence we wore where everyone could see it. And the whole time, it was running a program in your brain that nobody told you about.
A full lecture from the Quiet Hour, recorded live. In this episode: the white bear you cannot not think of — we run the experiment together · why your brain builds the picture before it can apply the "don't," and why the don't falls off first at exactly the hours you're most vulnerable · whisper fades, shout stays: how repetition made sugar louder and the rule quieter · the glass floor — why one ordinary Tuesday could shatter a vow, and the what-the-hell effect that followed · and the turn, smaller and kinder than you're braced for: same plate, same plan, badge facing the other way.
You were not undisciplined. You were early — doing your best with the sentence you were given.
