Everything I Was Sure Of
I carried a great deal of weight for most of my adult life. At fifty-eight, diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, I did the hard thing — the strict way, holding a crystal vase of a plan for two years, terrified I'd drop it. And it worked. And then, slowly, it started to take things too.
This is the story of the practice that loosened all of it: taking the things I was most certain of, holding them up to the light, and asking — is that actually true? In this episode, six certainties turned over one by one: the number someone handed me · "I have no willpower" (and the folklore of the willpower tank) · the rigidity I called safety — and how the grip builds the cliff · the belief that food was the problem, when food was the first solution I ever had · the pickle doctrine and the life sentence that turned out to be an analogy · and the quietest one — that I should be able to do this alone.
You were sure you were broken. That's the one thing I never questioned about you.
