Chapter 16 · The 5 R's
The Compassionate Return
For the moment you notice you've been hard on yourself. Walk it through, one R at a time. It takes about as long as a cup of tea cools enough to sip. There's no wrong way to do it, and no wagon to fall off.
Recognize
What's happening right now?
Just notice. Nothing to fix yet. Naming it is what quiets the alarm.
Respond
The sacred pause
Hand on heart, if that feels okay. Breathe with the circle, three times. In the space between the moment and your reaction is your power to choose.
Reframe
Kind, and true
Not positive thinking. Accurate thinking, through the lens of compassion.
Release
Let the grading go
Shoulders down. Jaw soft. Breathe out. You know this one. It's the grip-catch.
The critic's words will appear here.
Repeat
You just returned.

Again? Wonderful. It's working.
You'll need this again, maybe before dinner. That won't mean it didn't work. Every return strengthens the path back.
